LATEST NEWS!

APRIL 25, 2012

Wow, a lot has happened in the last year. Best news is, I'm still alive. Sad news is, there is as yet no cure for my type of cancer so I'll be on Chemo the rest of my life. I was told two weeks ago that I am the longest-lived cancer patient taking chemo at the James Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Not the oldest, just the oldest survivor (19 1/2 years) not so sure as to what kind of an honor that is.

Some sad news though is I lost two good human friends, Ellie Matlin to cancer last June and Bloise Boyd to heart surgery complications. I'm proud to say, that last July 1, i was one of the three judges picked to judge their fiftieth anniversary show. I waited until the last minute to acknowledge acceptance as I had received chemo just 2 days prior to the flight and show. Bloise died in October. Though his son Paul sent me other pictures, this is how I best remember him, tough, determined, opinionated and cantankerous. I miss you old friend.

Bloise Boyd

Unfortunately, I have no updated pictures of Ellie. Suffice to say, I was a friend with her mother and her since the mid 70's.

Hard to believe its been a year since I wrote about Hidalgo. Due to my health, I've been unable to show him since last July. However, when a "breeder" breeds something as handsome as him, we are forced to follow through with hips elbows, etc.

Pat and I are both delighted to say that the SV has written back that Hidalgo received the "a' normal rating for both his hips and elbows!

I'm not including a photo of him since he is out of coat at the moment and there will always be those that can't see the proper structure without the beautiful coat. I promise to update them later. I can't wait to breed him now and hope he can produce as well as his father.

A side note. Perhaps this is for the many critics out there who always seem to have something negative to say about those breeders that compete with their dogs throughout the world. We charge more for our puppies and dogs, because we pay more for their imported parents and we continue to pay the higher prices for the maintenance of our dogs.

It has always been our policy to first have our dogs x-rayed: preliminaries by the OFA before sending them off to the SV. But these costs are becoming prohibitive! The cost of x-rays (digital), the cost of mailing them off to the OFA, the conversion costs of changing them from digital to the old fashioned plates because the SV does not yet look at digital results. The cost of sending them to the WDA and then on to the SV! I don't have the details in front of me at the moment, but I can tell you the total cost was almost 500 dollars! Worse, it took over nine weeks to get the results back from the SV. I'm happy to report the OFA results were back in less than 2 weeks.

I know for a fact there are shepherd breeders here on Long Island selling their puppies for what i pay for hip results!

Can any logical human being really believe that, in most cases (those breeders selling puppies for five hundred dollars), that their puppy's parents have certified x-rays?

Kind of like some of the so-called SCH trainers here on the island.

While they may offer "bite" training, they don't offer tracking or obedience with it.

I read recently where one indoor club was offering certificates without scores! That's almost as bad as some of the dog people trying to convince buyers that shepherds with higher withers than croups (eg. A naturally sloping back) are dysplastic even though the written standard throughout the world calls for it. Why don't potential buyers bother to even read the standard before asking the seller questions?

Sigh .... Until next time, if there is one.

MAY 2011

AFTER BEING TREATED FOR FOURTH STAGE CLL CANCER AT THE JAMES HOSPITAL IN
COLUMBUS, OHIO FOR OVER TWO YEARS NOW, I NEVER THOUGHT I'D EVER HAVE THE
OPPORTUNITY TO ANNOUNCE ANYTHING ON THESE PAGES AGAIN. HELL, FOUR OF THE
TOP HOSPITALS HERE ON LONG ISLAND TOLD PAT AND I THAT I'D BE DEAD BEFORE
JUNE 2009! FURTHERMORE, I WAS TURNED DOWN BY FOUR OTHER HOSPITALS WITH
SIMILIAR RESEARCH PROGRAMS. SPECIAL THANKS ARE DUE TO THE SECOND FLOOR NURSES FOR PUTTING UP WITH THIS CRUSTY AND CANTANKEROUS OLD MAN. TEN MONTHS LATER, I WAS SENT HOME TO CLEAN OUT MY SYSTEM OF DRUGS FOR TWO MONTHS ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT I HAD A 5 CM CANCEROUS GROWTH IN MY BLADDER. AFTER A PAINFUL WEEK IN THE
HOSPITAL, THEY CLAIM THEY GOT IT ALL AND I RETURNED TO THE JAMES ONCE MORE FOR STEM CELL IMPLANTS LAST APRIL.

THINGS WERE GOING GREAT UNTIL MARCH WHEN I CONTACTED PNEUMONIA AND ENDED UP IN THE HOSPITAL AGAIN. DREADED NEWS, THE CANCER WAS BACK!

THE FOLKS AT WINTHROP HOSPITAL IN MINEOLA (WORKING CLOSELY WITH THE JONES) STARTED ME ON A NEW DRUG WHICH SEEMS VERY POSITIVE, I WAS SUPPOSSED TO RECEIVE 12 STRAIGHT WEEKLY INFUSIONS OF AZERRA, BUT THE POWERS THAT BE AT MEDICARE SAID NO AFTER EIGHT AND I AM TO ONLY RECEIVE THE NEXT FOUR, ONCE A MONTH. HOW GOOD WAS IT WORKING! IT DROPPED MY WBC FROM 100 TO 8 IN JUST 3 TREATMENTS. SEEMS TO ME THEY'D BE DELIGHTED TO HAVE SOMEONE WHO HAS SURVIVED 18 YEARS AS A POSTER CHILD RATHER THAN LET "GRANDPA" DIE. BUT THEN, THATS ANOTHER FIGHT FOR ANOTHER DAY.

ON A BRIGHTER NOTE, I WISH TO THANK JOHN AND GAYLE KIRKWOOD FOR THEIR HOSPITALITY. DR. JOHN IS A LYMPHOMA RESEARCH CANCER SPECIALIST. GAYLE IS .... A DAMN TOUGH COMPETITOR AMONG OTHER THINGS. SHE ARRANGED FOR ME TO USE KRISTI HUDAK AS MY HANDLER. BOTH HIDALGO AND KRISTI UPHELD THEIR END AND EVEN GOT SUPPORT "DOUBLE HANDLING " FROM ANOTHER COMPETITOR AND FRIEND PATRICK KUEHN. UNFORTUNATELY HIDALGO WASN'T AT HIS BEST HAVING DEVELOPED DIARRHEA THE DAY BEFORE WHICH LEFT HIM A LITTLE WASTED. STILL HE PUT UP A GOOD FIGHT UNTIL THE FINISH WHEN HE STOPPED AND WAS FORCED TO RELIEVE HIMSELF BECAUSE OF THE DIARRHEA AND WAS PLACED SECOND.

A GOOD START BEATEN BY A GOOD DOG THAT PERFORMED WELL. BY THE WAY, HIS DADDY VIX IS JUST TWO PICTURES DOWN AND WE HAVE PUPPIES AVAILBLE BY HIM NOW. LIKE FATHER, LIKE SONS......

THE BEGINNING OF DREAMS REALIZED (YES, AT 5 1/2 MONTHS, HE'S THE SAME PUPPY
IN THE ABOVE PHOTOS). HIS NAME IS HIDALGO! NAMED AFTER THE MUSTANG IN
THE MOVIE OF THE SAME NAME BECAUSE I WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE QUALITY AND
CHARACTER OF THE MAN AND HIS HORSE. IT TAKES BOTH TO DEVELOP A WINNING
DOG AND BECAUSE I CAN NO LONGER HANDLE MY OWN DOGS, A GOOD HANDLER TOO.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU KRISTI HUDAK FOR DOING THE HONORS. TURNS OUT SHE'S
NOT A BAD SCH TRAINER EITHER.

Great News! We received back Hidalgo's OFA Preliminary Hips & Elbow Info on June 22, 2011. Hips and Elbows are both GOOD. People have asked me many times why we do this with the dogs we intend to keep and breed. My answer is simple, if they won't pass at 6 + months of age, they sure as hell won't get any better at one year old when we retake and send them again to the OFA and then to the SV for certification of breed ability.

Despite our many years of breeding German Shepherds(44), we are neither Clark Kent, aka Superman (x-ray vision) or Dr. Dolittle (who it was claimed spoke and listened to the animals) . We require the services of certified and identifiable x-rays read by licensed orthopedic surgeons to determine the quality of our dogs hips and elbows.

We are happy to announce that Vix v Polarkreis completed his AD, BH, Sch1 and KK1 by November 22 of this year and is back home here in NY. Along the way his trainers also took the time to show him in three show events. The results were quite gratifying.

There are many videos Andreas and Isa took on their website of some early training they were doing with Vix back in June. Of course, these are quite dated now. Yesterday, one week after his returning home, Vix did his first protection training with Steve Simkins and I. He was quite responsive to all commands and released always by the second Aus. Two different people worked his leash. He bites with real conviction and a full mouth. He is very quick. The more aggressive the handler's move the more aggressive Vix becomes. However, the best part is, Vix loves puppies and is not the least aggressive with other dogs. To my delight and surprise, you can see Andreas and Isa put a lot of time in with the dog. While there are always difficulties with people from two different cultures and languages trying to understand each other, after spending a couple of days at their home we both understood each other better. I have no problem in recommending them to people from my country for training their dogs.

It is with great honor we add this dogs win to this page. Pastor, was sold as a 12 week old puppy. Like all our dogs he was sold with a "Pet" Contract even though we knew it was the intent of the owner to breed and show him. His first owner was Fernando Burgos who showed the dog to his AKC Championship after we had introduced him to show ring and the numerous judges and handlers involved. After completing his title, Fernando decided to concentrate on only his German dogs. He asked me to help him find an owner that would promote the show career and betterment of the dog. We felt we accomplished this by selling him to the two families below.

Perhaps this is a good time to paraphrase something I heard in the movie, "Rocky Balboa" when he was speaking to a review board about getting his license back to fight again ..... Look, I've come to accept the fact that as I grow older, there are some things I must leave behind, but not my integrity or the things I believe most in................

The dogs we have bred, trained, bought and shown. are my passion. Few people who have ever been to our home can understand my personal intensity and desire to compete and win.

Though only one of Pastor Burgos ribbons was won with me handling him, it is his owners that have honored Pat and I, as his breeders, by showing him to his many wins and titles. We thank you all for such an honor and proudly put him on our website for the world to see. Thank you all.

AUGUST 3, COBERG, GERMANY

I RECEIVED THIS POST FROM ANDREAS THIS WEEK. FRANKLY, I NEVER HAD HEARD OF A VDH SHOW BEFORE. APPARENTLY ITS LIKE AN AKC ALL BREED SHOW WHEREIN THE WINNERS DOGS AND BITCHES CAN COMPETE AGAINST EACH OTHER FOR BEST OF BREED. I UNDERSTAND THERE WERE 19 DOGS SHOWN IN THE COMPETITION. RATHER THAN REPEAT WHAT HE SAID, I WILL JUST INCLUDE THE COPY OF HIS POST.

FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN THE TYPE OF TRAINING VIX IS RECEIVING, HERE ARE LINKS TO TWO VIDEOS ANDREAS AND ISA SENT ME LEADING UP TO THIS NICE WIN:

We won everything what was possible to win.

  • Excellent 1
  • Best Male
  • Best of Breed
