FOR THE CONNOISSEUR
Dogs presented on this page are generally priced at $3,000 or higher. These dogs are 3 months or older. Generally, they have had all their shots and
their purchase will save the average buyer at least $1,200 in vet visits. While they may be under the age of 12
months and considered puppies, they are priced higher than those on our litter page. If you want one of these rather
than a younger puppy, please be specific when you fill out the remarks section when making your inquiries. In most
cases, these dogs have already begun some training.

It is Phoenix's wish to remain
a breeder of quality imported shepherds. While we may import dogs for our personal use, all the dogs we show on
our Phoenix pages in the future will be from dogs we have bred or whelped here on our property. However, I do suggest
for those of you still wishing to buy a German import, be it puppy or adult, who can't afford to pay long distance
phone calls to Germany, have difficulty in either understanding the manner in which foreign owners speak or write
you in an email, then may we suggest you either click on the link button, or by
Clicking on the SIG Logo at the Bottom of the Page.
Time and again I'm asked from buyers, "Why do some puppies cost more than
others?" Most people really don't like to hear the truth, because it sounds so harsh to some of them. However,
lately I've been asking parents of multi children these questions. Be frank with me, you have several children,
are they all equal in your eyes? Isn't one a little smarter in school than the other?
Doesn't one perhaps have a better personality than another? Isn't one frankly, more physically attractive than
the others? Now before you answer, this has nothing to do with LOVE, or the fact that as parent you try not to
show favoritism. I'm just asking you to step back and evaluate, what you and your husband have created. Most honest
people will admit, yes to the following
question when presented to them in this way. Now a breeder of dogs has to be even more critical and sincere when
breeding animals. Unlike most parents, dog breeders do sell their dogs to others. If a breeder has enough positive
experience behind them, they can evaluate their puppies at an early age and price them accordingly. All breeders
are not created equal nor are their developmental growth the same. If the dogs they buy and show can't win under
a judge, and then in all likelihood, the puppies they produce won't either.
For example, we take the time to show off our trophy wall in our ads and when you come into our home. Well, a trophy
wall does indicate your wins and that usually means you have adhered to the standard by breeding animals that have
been acceptable in judges eyes.
Judges are people that have passed both written and evaluation testing regarding not only their dogs but those
of others as well. They are required to become versed in ring procedure and protocol. They are required to judge
at least 5 preliminary shows to have their technique evaluated and questioned as to why and how they did what they
did to other people of skill. Some judges are required to do more until they get it right.
Here in the USA we have two types of judges, breeder judges, those which have bred and won with a number of dogs
they have bred and all breed judges, those that have taken written tests regarding the breed and are required to
judge the breed 3 times and get satisfactory evaluation of their actions. I am a breeder judge.
My wife Pat and I have bred and or owned 11 American Champions, 7 Canadian Champions and after moving to German
imported shepherds in 2000, have now owned and won with both dogs we have bred and bought. We have two VA rated
dogs, the highest-ranking title a dog can receive in any country. We are proud to say that 3 of our dogs have placed
in the top 40's in three German Sieger shows with competition entries of 300 or more dogs!
To my knowledge there are only three other American breeders in this country that have had both American Champions
and German VA rated dogs. One I am proud to say understudied me for three years and I sold him what would become
his only American Champion. This same dog was sold to Canada last year and is now a Canadian Champion! I was also
responsible for him being able to purchase his VA rated female. I expect if he stays in the business, he will one
day surpass my records.
Anyhow, I point these things out for a reason. I read where many people talk about what they know, but when asked
to show me the titled dogs they have owned from the results of their applied knowledge, they usually fail to produce
them. After all, if a person has never owned or bred a Champion, how can you ask them to point out a nice specimen
to you from a litter they have on the ground? Unless they are 70 years old as I am, they are going to keep their
best puppies and show them hoping to prove their worth as a breeder. I'm too old now, any puppy I would keep for
myself, will in all likelihood outlive me and I don't want that to happen. I will sell off my best pups and dogs,
but only at a price I feel worthy. From time to time I will exhibit such young dogs on this page for those of you
that may consider starting out with what I consider an unusually nice specimen of the breed.
Despite the fact that I may feel these dogs are of a "show quality", they will be sold with a "pet"
contract just as their siblings are just priced higher. It's like comparing a BMW M3 model to other 3 series BMW's,
same dealer, just a better version of an already great product. That said, I do hope a few of you will enjoy the
below animals. |

Recently I was asked by one of our clients,"Do you have any left over
puppies, you can't sell?". I was happy to tell her, NO! Of course, she was happy with the dog we sold them
and wanted another, but didn't have the funds to do so as she has a number of children and we all know what kids
can cost.
We receive dozens of questions as to why we price our dogs the way we do. Many first and even second time purchasers
who have bought dogs from lesser knowledge breeders ask, "Why aren't all the pups priced the same?" My
answer is simple, "Because all pups are not created equal. Only an experienced breeder that has bred, owned
and titled Champions of their own, for many years, can really tell the difference." Anyone can allow two dogs
to fornicate in their back yard, that doesn't make them a "breeder."
When will purchasers learn that the reason dogs are shown, is to prove the genetic qualities of the dogs? Dogs
and bitches that win in the ring indicate animals with SUPERIOR STRUCTURE to those that don't. When bred correctly
and with prior knowledge of ancestral pedigree; qualities such as longevity, character, color, temperament and
limited structural and health problems can be attained. It should be the goal of every breeder to breed and buy
the best stock they can. It doesn't matter if your purpose for purchase is just for a "PET." It is even
more important. If you are like most of our clients (70%) you have kids. Temperament then becomes a priority.
Here on Long Island, Pet stores prices for GSD's start at $1,000! This without the purchaser ever seeing either
parent??? With that in mind, can you really believe a breeder of having better quality than a pet store if their
price is cheaper????? Hello. Wake up and stop trying to kid yourself! You know you have been taught better. Perhaps,
some logical food for thought. Do quality car dealers sell cars with the same guarantees as the cheaper dealers?
Of course not. They don't have to. Quality is a name that is earned by years of dealing with people.
Breeders or businesses with no experience have to have some gimmick to get your attention. They draw you away from
the quality of their product and try to dazzle you with "guarantees"! What a joke. What happens to you
the purchaser when the guaranty they gave for two years, is no good because they went out of business 2 weeks after
they sold you the dog? There is no one to collect from and your stuck with a really unhealthy animal that will
soon have to be put down.
If you buy a cheap dog, along with it comes all the breed problems that come from those that breed for no other
reason that to make a buck. After all, if their dogs can't compete, they shouldn't be bred. That is one of the
main reasons titles were created.
From their bad experience with one of those cheap dogs, they now come to us with a list of ridiculous requests
for guarantees against "this, that and whatever." I've actually had one tell me, "I want a dog,
I'll never have to go to the Vet with!" How ridiculous. I'm a dog breeder, not GOD.
Puppies and dogs are no different from humans, they need medical checkups the same as babies do. Believe me, the
yearly checkup and preventative medicines like flea and tick drops to heartworm medicines will cost you far more
than the price we sell you a dog for. We sell you a healthy dog at the time its sold and we expect the new owners
to care for it as well as we did.
People, look around you, nothing costs the same as it did 10 years ago, unless its made in China, and we have all
had bad experiences with their imported dog foods and toys this year, haven't we?
I'm a somewhat candid, practical and outspoken person. I'm not a good salesman. I try to let the quality of my
dogs sell themselves. But even I sometimes get a little frustrated and remind people that "quality" costs
more. Can a buyer actually believe that the quality of a dogs parent that costs less than $1,000 produce an equally
good puppy as one that cost $10,000 - 30,000? Of course not, I don't care what product you talking about.
What I cant understand is when they have the opportunity to purchase a puppy from either parent and the price differential
is less than $500, its like offering the same person 2 sets of car keys, those of a Kia and those of a BMW 3 series
and saying. Take your choice, the BMW is only $500 more. For those of you that have never driven a BMW, do so before
you answer. For those that have, I know what your answer should be. |
